LAWRENCE, NEW YORK (NOVEMBER 2022)—Lawrence Primary School students were busy before heading into their Thanksgiving break with various classroom lessons, activities, and their school-wide annual Turkey Trot. This school event promoted physical education and family engagement, allowing students to show their families some of the skills that they have learned in physical education class such as skipping, galloping, hopping, and much more. Inside their classrooms, students read books and participated in an array of crafts and activities.

For example, students read All About Turkeys by Jim Arnosky, after which students listed facts about wild turkeys on hand-made paper feathers and created turkey apples by using toothpicks, marshmallows, and various gummy candies. Students also read Turkey Trouble by Wendi J. Silvano, then disguised their turkeys with different materials found in their classrooms. Students also had a great time creating their own balloons after reading Balloons Over Broadway by Melissa Sweet which tells the story of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade.
