LAWRENCE, NEW YORK (NOVEMBER 2024)—Lawrence Primary School welcomed students and families for its annual literary night, an evening dedicated to fostering a love for reading and storytelling. This year, the event centered around What Would You Do in a Book About You? by Jean Reidy, an enchanting story that invites young minds to explore their narratives.

Throughout the evening, students rotated through a variety of stations designed to ignite their creativity and inspire them to become storybuilders. With guidance from teachers and volunteers, they outlined their own stories, envisioning characters, settings, and events that would make their tales unique.

Adding the excitement, local authors Tim and Carol Aherns joined the festivities to share The Owl in the Tower, their charming children’s book. This delightful story, which highlights the iconic Jones Beach Tower and the adventures of an owl and a father-daughter duo, captivated students and families alike. The authors emphasized that inspiration can stem from even the smallest moments in life, encouraging students to find stories in their everyday experiences. Attendees had the chance to win a copy of the book, further enhancing the evening's literary spirit.

In the library, students became true architects of their stories, selecting characters, settings, and pivotal events to lay the foundation for their future writing endeavors. This hands-on approach not only nurtured their imagination but also instilled confidence in their storytelling abilities. The evening concluded with engaging literacy-based games, where students used Legos to bring their imaginations to life. They also enjoyed classic word games such as Boggle, Scrabble, and CVC word puzzles, demonstrating that reading can be both educational and entertaining.

Lawrence Primary School is committed to promoting literacy and encouraging a lifelong love of reading among its students. The success of this year's Literacy Night highlights the importance of community involvement and creative learning experiences in developing young readers.
