Family Literacy

On Tuesday, October 29th, students and families from Lawrence Primary School joined us for our annual literacy night. The focus of the night surrounded the story "What Would You Do In a Book About You?" by Jean Reidy. Students rotated through stations gaining inspiration for their own stories and becoming story builders as they outlined what they would do if they were to write a book. See below for an outline of our different activities and pictures from the event!

Author Visit featuring Tim Aherns and Carol Aherns

Tim and Carol Aherns joined us as authors to share their inspiration and children's story titled The Owl in the Tower. The story highlights the Jones Beach Tower and speaks of the owl who resides in this tower, and a father and daughters tale of the sight and sounds of the beach. Students learned that inspiration from a story can come from even the smallest of life events and later were able to win a chance to receive a copy of the book!

The story can be found on YouTube here.

In the library, students became story builders as they took their inspiration and imagination to build their story - brick by brick. Students selected a character they would want to be, a setting and an event that would take place in their very own story. These established the building blocks for their future writing!

BuilderLiteracy Fun!

At our last station, students engaged in literacy based games where they learned to bring their imagination and stories to life through using Legos. Additionally, games were provided such as Boggle, Scrabble and CVC word puzzles for students to see how reading can be fun, and is incorporated even when they are playing a game with a friend or family member.
