Each year we celebrate the week leading up to Read Across America Day by engaging our students in the joys of reading. This year, Read Across America day is celebrated on Saturday March 2nd. We celebrate our Reading Spirit week with a variety of themes pertaining to some of our favorite read alouds.
Additionally, throughout the week members of the community joined us to speak to our students about how reading has impacted their lives and is important to their current careers. Then, each community member shared a read aloud story with our students pertaining to their current career!
Grade 1 listened to How to Catch a Class Pet read by a Veterinarian
Grade 2 listened to Officer Buckle and Gloria read by a Nassau County Police Officer
Grade 3 listened to Pete the Cat: Firefighter Pete read by an Inwood Firefighter
Along with our guest readers, all students participated in an assembly featuring the author Patty Labriola. Ms. Labriola shared with our students the background of the story and the process that it takes to write and illustrate a book. Ms. Labriola's book, The Yawn That Went Around the World, tells a story of how in one pivotal moment, a young girl sends a yawn out on an adventure around the world. Her yawn returns to teach her what a big difference one little person can make with just one small action.
Thank you to our school PTA who purchased a copy of the book for each of our classrooms. For more information about the author, please see the attached link.
