Day 5 of Black Americans you don't know, but should: Bayard Rustin. Bayard Rustin was an African American leader in social movements for civil rights, socialism, nonviolence, and gay rights. Rustin worked with A. Philip Randolph on the March on Washington Movement, in 1941, to press for an end to racial discrimination in employment. Even as a young man, Rustin fought for many causes, including racial equality and workers' rights. Later in his life is when he started to advocate for gay rights. One of Rustin's most notable contributions to the African American Civil Rights Movement was his planning of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. From 1944 to 1946, Rustin was imprisoned in Lewisburg for organizing protests against segregated dining facilities. But that didn't stop him. During his incarceration, he spent his time organizing the Free India Committee. Bayard was arrested again in January 1953, hours after he had given a speech in California. Police officers spotted him with his partner and arrested him. Not for anything criminal, but because he was gay. Rustin was sentenced to 60 days in jail and forced to register as a sex offender for the “morals charge,” which was often used to target gay people in those years. Bayard Rustin sadly isn't spoken about at all and is truly 1 of the thousands of black underrated gems in history
