African American Club – Advisor – Mr. Avalos

Day 13 of Black Americans you don’t know, but should: Ida B. Wells. Ida Bell Wells-Barnett was an American investigative journalist, educator, and early leader in the civil rights movement. She was one of the founders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People also commonly known as the NAACP. Ida B. Wells is best known for leading an anti-lynching crusade in the United States in the 1890s. She also fought for woman suffrage. Her expose about an 1892 lynching enraged locals, who burned her press and drove her from Memphis. After a few months, the threats became so bad she was forced to move to Chicago, Illinois. After her relocation to Chicago in 1894, she worked tirelessly to advance the cause of black equality and black power. Wells established the first black kindergarten, organized black women, and helped elect the city's first black alderman, just a few of her many achievements.
